Yeah, We’re Still Over It: Summer Walker Album Review

By Kenyetta Smith

Still Over It. A short, yet powerful phrase that many can relate to. On November 6th, Summer Walker released her second studio album, a continuation of her 2019 debut, Over It. The album tells the chronological story of her troubles with ex and baby father, producer London on da Track.

Summer and London’s relationship included a lot of “baby momma drama,” and scandals, having to do with his past partners, infidelity and Summer’s pregnancy. It is apparent that Summer detailed these experiences in her songwriting as they occurred, beginning with the first track, Bitter, in which she boldly addresses London’s other baby mother and cheating allegations. The story continues from August 2019 up until October 2021, ending with 4th Baby Mama, where we hear an unapologetic Summer release her frustrations and express her anger and disappointment with London.

The album has many features, including a narration by Cardi B, an upbeat verse from City Girl’s JT, vocals by SZA and Ari Lennox, production by N.E.R.D, a much-desired prayer by Ciara and more. There are fun dance tracks including the lead single, Ex For A Reason and Dat Right There, whereas some songs are unplugged and tug a little more on your heartstrings, like You Don’t Know Me and

Session 33. One major difference between Still Over It and its 2019 predecessor is the more clear jazz influences on songs such as Unloyal and Insane. Some fans prefer this, and are happy that London on da Track had less of a hand in production. However, his sound, which is heavily based in 90s-00s R&B influences, is prevalent on some tracks, including Closure and Throw It Away.

Few fans were lucky enough to have an early listen, thanks to Culture Fusion Agency. 25 AUC women gathered on November 5th to enjoy the album, take pictures, receive goodies and merch, and were even surprised by Summer Walker herself. Summer nonchalantly arrived at Morehouse's Kilgore Student Center to greet the lucky fans, thank them for their support, and encourage them to learn from her mistakes as they listen through.

Other fans took to Twitter to enjoy the album together. There were live reactions, memes crying, collective shock and much more, seeing that most listeners shared some of the experiences detailed in the songs. The general consensus is that the album is a beautiul, but painful storytelling experience, arguably topping Over It, a fan favorite.

Still Over It has been highly-rated thus far, and is projected to debut at #1 on music charts, according to ChartData. Expectations were high for Summer’s sophomore project, but it can be agreed that she was able to surpass them.
