Senior Nia Harris is changing what it means to be a woman in the sports industry. With her school talk show and personal YouTube Channel, she is bringing a new twist to sports.
Harris is a senior Mass Media Arts major. With her Radio, Television and Film concentration, Harris aspires to continue building her expertise in Sports Broadcasting. In the future, she hopes to cover NBA games.
For Harris, Clark Atlanta University has opened doors in her field. “Clark has helped me with my aspirations…with allowing me to do live sideline coverage reports of the basketball and football games,” Harris said. Alongside covering the school’s games, Harris is a part of WTSU, the Atlanta University Center student ran radio station. She runs “Level Up”, a sports talk show, with co-host Nathan McAlister, another CAU student. In addition to the work she’s done in the media industry, Harris has made her mark in other aspects. She is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Harris’ love for sports and basketball in particular started at a young age. As a child, she enjoyed watching NBA games with her family. Growing up, her
favorite player and biggest inspiration was Kobe Bryant. “My role model, Kobe Bryant, was a major part of me falling in love with the game of basketball. He fueled my sports broadcasting aspirations, as well. His greatness and relentlessness in the game made me strive for greatness,” Harris said.
Harris hails from Memphis, Tenn. She has two older sisters who attended CAU. From a young child, she knew she wanted to attend CAU. “I knew Clark Atlanta University was for me. I remember every time I visited [as a child], I talked about how I couldn’t wait to grow up and go there,” Harris said in an interview. “CAU showed how much diversity there is within our Black community,” Harris continued.
After college, Harris plans on interning with different sports broadcasting corporations. She wants to continue to build her experience. Harris wants to remain focused on expanding her YouTube Channel: Nia’s Full Court Press, which follows the latest news in the NBA. Her ultimate goal is to work for the NBA, as a sports broadcaster.
