Meet New CAU Provost

By Arianna Johnson

Clark Atlanta University president announced the appointment of Dr. G Dale Wesson to the role of provost and senior vice president of affairs.

Dr. George T. French announced the appointment of Dr. Wesson via a statement on Oct. 7. Dr. Wesson’s term began on Oct. 30 as he will succeed Dr. Dorcas D. Bowles, who previously served as interim provost.

Dr. Wesson's previous work in higher education extends over 20 years. Many of these years, he served as a tenured professor in the engineering and computer science department and as vice president for research and economic development at Virginia State University (VSU) -- a fellow Historically Black College and University.

“At VSU, Dr. Wesson was the university's principal research officer, reporting directly to the President. He advised the President on issues regarding the University's research enterprise,” Dr. French stated.

VSU was not the only HBCU that Dr. Wesson served as he was the interim vice president of research at Florida A&M University and the vice president for the division of research, economic development, and public service at South Carolina State University. In 2013, he joined the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) as the school’s vice president for research and economic development. During his time at UMES, the $13.5 million Hawk Plaza Graduate Housing Complex was built by the UMES Research Foundation.

Dr. French expressed his gratitude for Dr. Dorcas and her service since her term began in Jan. 2019. “I want to thank Dr. Dorcas D. Bowles, who came out of retirement and has served tirelessly as interim provost since January 2019,” he stated. “She brought a stable and historical voice and intuitive thinking to the position and has been a trusted advisor to me since my arrival in September 2019.”

Dr. Wesson received his Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, his Master of Science degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Michigan State University.
