A little more than a month ago, rappers Kanye West and Drake both released highly-anticipated albums. Kanye West’s “Donda” was released Aug. 29, and Drake followed on Sept. 3, with “Certified Lover Boy.” While both albums include hot-topic releases that hit record sales, neither project is as relevant with age.
Kanye West’s “Donda,” is a Christian-themed dedication to his late mother, Donda West. Although a lengthy album, there were a few tracks that reached popularity. The album has a variety of guest appearances, including rappers Lil Durk, Pop Smoke, Travis Scott, and Young Thug.
Due to its lengthiness, the album is not one that fans seem to be revisiting often. Some songs such as ‘Hurricane,’ featuring Lil Baby and The Weeknd and ‘Moon,’ featuring Kid Cudi and Don Toliver seem to be the only tracks still on the Billboard’s Hot 100 charts. Overall, it was a decent album, but far from Kanye’s best.
Far more cohesive, Drake’s sixth studio album, “Certified Lover Boy,” is a project filled with themes of relationships, success, and rivalry. It beat out “Donda” in first week sales. The star song of the album, ‘Way 2 Sexy,’ featuring Future and Young Thug, took over social media and is still #4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
“Certified Lover Boy” also had an abundance of guest features, including Giveon, Yebba, Tems, and Ty Dolla $ign. 21 Savage’s performance on ‘Knife Talk,’ also featuring Project Pat, is still currently a top 10 hit.
While “Donda” only has two songs still currently on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart, “Certified Lover Boy'' has a total of 11 chart entries, proving itself to be more popular than Kanye’s work. Nonetheless, both artists released successful albums that are sure to be played by listeners in the future.
