CAU x Poynter Institute

Clark Atlanta University partnered with The Poynter Institute to develop a Georgia voting guide amidst the election on Nov. 3.

“Our collaboration with The Poynter Institute allows us to provide a platform that helps elevate the voices of younger Ga. voters by getting them more involved in the democratic process,” Christopher Daniel, who is the instructor of Mass Media Arts and Digital Journalism at CAU, said

Designed to help students make educated decisions when casting their ballots, the partnership was pushed into fruition by HBCU students and faculty at campuses such as Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.

The voting guide provides research and observations from the CAU faculty and staff about each statewide candidate and referendums on the ballot while also suggesting advice for safe voting. The CAU students who participated were senior journalism students Miranda Perez and Kayla Grant, and junior journalism students Derrian Carter and Giana Levy.

It’s been an excellent opportunity for our students to work as writers, editors, and photographers while taking some of the guesswork out of voting for the community at large,” Daniel stated.

The Poynter Institute is a non-profit journalism school and research organization located in Florida. Since 1975, Poynter has led international projects supporting the journalism field and gives access to credible information. Poynter champions freedom of expression, civil dialogue, and compelling journalism that helps citizens participate in healthy democracies. They prepare journalists worldwide to hold accountability for those in power and advocate for honest information in the marketplace.

On Nov. 3, students were able to both work and took away necessary information to help them along their path, courtesy of the CAU and Poynter partnership. Opportunities such as these can lead to progression in students as well as faculty and staff.
