In light of it being election season and ample different outlets are advocating the importance of voting, Clark Atlanta students are putting their money where their mouth is.
Jeydah Jenkins, a junior mass media arts major at the university, established the “Panthers to the Polls Scholarship” to “encourage other student leaders to create change around us during this political climate,” said Jenkins.
“I also thought about how much people have been struggling financially due to the pandemic, so creating a scholarship to encourage my peers to vote was like shooting two birds with one stone,” Jenkins stated when asked about her inspiration to start the scholarship.
Jenkins explained why voting is important to her because she believes that you are forcing the government to hear your vote. She also believes in
The strength of numbers, “and if we all stand up together, we can shift the country,” Jenkins stated.
The scholarship requirements consisted of being an enrolled student at Clark Atlanta University, one short essay on the importance of voting, and proof that you are registered to vote in your current state.
Jenkins selected the scholarship recipients on Saturday. The first-place prize was given to Ashley Meeks, a junior mass media arts center and the second place was given to Ariana Monk, a freshman political science major. According to Jenkins, both exhibited exemplary efforts to encourage their peers to stay educated and vote in this political climate.
