Makel Young embodies what it means to be more than an athlete, having many talents and interests most would not know about. The 6’0,” 215-pound running back and Tallahassee, a Fla. native, was inspired to play the game of football early in his life.
“Football started for me at a young age. Before I even started playing, I would always be around the house with a football in my hands as a baby,” Young said. “The moment I started playing organized football, I just knew it was the sport for me. My favorite player, LaDainian Tomlinson, is the reason that I play running back today.”
With the fall season’s cancellation due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Young explained the goals he set out for his senior season when football resumes. “A championship is the ultimate goal above all else,” he says. “Individually, I would love to be Clark Atlanta’s next 1,000-yard rusher. Also, winning the SIAC offensive player of the year and making first-team all-conference are two of the goals I will be chasing.”
He also expressed the legacy he wants to leave on the football program and the players who come after him. “The ultimate goal is to bring a championship to the program. If winning a championship is something we come up short doing, I want to make sure I leave the program in a much better place than it was when I got here,” he said.
Young enjoys spending time with his family and friends outside of the game, creating content on his YouTube channel titled “Kelnplay TV” and currently getting his real estate license. As graduation swiftly approaches, he talked about what he wants to do professionally and how Clark Atlanta University has shaped him for the better.
“When I graduate, I plan on being an entrepreneur with many different sources of income. As I stated earlier, wholesale real estate and real estate are a few of the markets I have been dabbling in right now. I also plan on starting my own social media marketing company as well,” he says.
“CAU definitely has been filled with challenges but ultimately has helped me find my true self. Coming to CAU was the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me in terms of the opportunities it has presented, the people I have met and the places I have been,” Young says. “It’s all been a long process but definitely one that I’m grateful for. Find a way or make one will forever be instilled in me.”
